Set up your Max Wireless broadband

Your Max Wireless plan is designed to connect to our 4G and 5G networks. To get a strong signal, where you place your modem makes all the difference. Your modem needs to be near a window facing in the direction of your nearest 5G cell tower.

Find out how to set up your modem to get the most from your Max Wireless broadband.

First, find your nearest cell tower.

Once you've received your 5G modem, the map below will help you find the direction of the best 5G cell tower for your property.

  1. Enter your address in the search bar above the map.
  2. The large green arrow that appears is pointing towards the best 5G cell tower for your location. Try to position your modem near a window facing in the direction the arrow is pointing.
  3. If you see a smaller orange arrow, it's pointing towards the next best 5G cell tower. If there's no suitable place to put your modem facing in the direction of the green arrow, find a window facing in the direction of the orange arrow instead.

This map does not check whether Max Wireless broadband is available at your address. If you want to see if you can get Max Wireless where you are, use the broadband address checker. Check address

To change to satellite view so you can see your house, select the small letter S on the lower right hand side of the map.

Next, set up your modem for a strong connection.

1. Give it a view

Set up your modem off the ground and near a window, facing in the direction of your nearest cell tower.

You can use the map above to find the right spot for it.

2. Give it space

Keep your modem clear of house plants, tech or big objects that could get in the way.

3. Go for green

Plug in your modem and give it a few minutes for the 5G signal light to go green.

If it doesn't, try moving it to a different spot.

Any questions?

First, use the map above to check which direction your local 5G cell towers are. Then try the following:

  • Make sure your modem is plugged into power and turned on.
  • It can take up to five minutes for your modem to find the signal. Check you've given it enough time.
  • Check your modem is close to a window facing in the direction the larger green arrow is pointing. If there's no suitable place with a power outlet there, see if there's a smaller orange arrow on the map. If there is, try putting your modem close to a window facing in the direction the orange arrow is pointing.
  • Move your modem closer to the window. On the windowsill is ideal.
  • Make sure there are no other objects close to your modem, such as tech, furniture, pot plants or curtains.
  • Try moving your modem around to face different directions.
  • Try a different window in your house.

The map will show you the direction of the best 5G cell towers for your location. It won't show whether you are able to get Max Wireless broadband at your address. If you're not seeing any arrows appear for your address, it may be that there isn't Max Wireless coverage where you are. You can see the coverage for your area on our network coverage page. See network coverage

To find out which broadband plans and technologies are available at your address, use our address checker. Check address

As we improve our network over time, more places will be able to get Max Wireless. So if it's not available at your address right now, keep checking back.

Find the direction of your cell tower in the map

  • Start typing your address in the search bar above the map. Select the right address when it appears.
  • You'll see a large green arrow pointing away from your address. This arrow is pointing in the direction of the best 5G cell tower for your location.
  • If there's an alternative 5G cell tower for your address, you'll see a smaller orange arrow as well. It's pointing towards the next best 5G cell tower for your location.

Find the right spot to set up your modem

  • Find a window on the side of your house facing the direction the larger green arrow is pointing. Check there's a power outlet there to plug your modem into.
  • If you're having trouble working out which side of the house it is, select the small 'S' on the lower right hand side of the map. This will change it to 'satellite' view. Then use the + button at the top left of the map to zoom in until you can see your house.
  • Put your modem as close to the window as you can. On a windowsill is ideal.
  • If you can't find a suitable spot there and there was a smaller orange arrow in your search result, try to find a window facing in that direction instead.
  1. Plug the grey phone cable into your phone and then plug the other end into your modem. Make sure you plug your phone into a power outlet as well.
  2. Check for a dial tone.
  3. If you can't hear a dial tone, turn your modem off and on again. If it's a new landline, it can take up to 30 minutes to activate.
  4. When you can hear a dial tone, your phone is set up.

  1. On your computer, mobile or tablet, look for your modem on the list of WiFi networks. You can find your modem's name on the bottom of your modem.
  2. Select your modem from the list. Type in the password (also on the bottom of your modem). When it connects, you can start browsing the internet.
  3. If your computer doesn't have WiFi, connect your computer to the modem using an ethernet cable.

Your service may sometimes switch between 5G and 4G. This happens to make sure you have an optimal connection even when your 5G signal is temporarily interrupted. If you find it happening a lot, try moving your modem to a different window in your house.

As we improve our 5G network over time, the best 5G cell towers for your location might also change. It's a good idea to check the tower finder map every few months to make sure your modem is still facing in the direction to pick up the strongest 5G signal.
